Show Review: Dance Gavin Dance with The Fall of Troy, Wolf & Bear, and Novelists
The Egyptian Room was packed wall to wall as Dance Gavin Dance rolled through Indianapolis with one of the most stacked lineups the venue has seen in a while. Between the chaos, technicality, and emotional highs throughout the night, it felt less like a standard concert and more like a full experience built for fans of progressive post-hardcore and everything adjacent to it.
Novelists opened the night and immediately locked people in. Their mix of soaring melodies and crushing heaviness gave the crowd an early taste of just how dynamic the evening was going to be. Even with people still filing into the room, the band had heads moving and the pit starting to open up. Their set felt sharp, emotional, and powerful all at once. Check out the gallery.
Next up was Wolf & Bear, who brought a completely different energy. Their blend of groove-heavy riffs, funk influence, and chaotic post-hardcore moments gave the crowd something fun to latch onto. There was this loose, unpredictable vibe to their set that made it impossible not to pay attention. The crowd fed right into it, dancing one minute and throwing down the next. Check out the gallery.
Then came The Fall of Troy, and suddenly it felt like the room leveled up into controlled insanity. Their technical precision mixed with pure chaos was incredible to watch. The band ripped through songs with an intensity that barely gave the crowd time to breathe. Every weird time signature, frantic guitar run, and explosive breakdown somehow landed perfectly. Longtime fans were losing their minds, and even newer listeners could not help but get pulled into the madness. Check out the gallery.
By the time Dance Gavin Dance hit the stage, the Egyptian Room was fully alive. The anticipation in the crowd had been building all night, and the second the band walked out, the place erupted. Their ability to blend technical musicianship with huge hooks and nonstop energy is still something few bands can pull off the way they do.
The set moved effortlessly between heavier moments, atmospheric sections, and the kind of massive choruses that had the entire room screaming along. Every member brought something unique to the performance, and together it felt incredibly tight while still leaving room for spontaneity and fun. The crowd reaction said everything. Constant movement, endless singalongs, crowdsurfers flying over the barricade, and fans hanging onto every note. Check out the gallery.
What made the night stand out most was how each band brought a completely different flavor while still fitting together perfectly. Novelists brought emotion, Wolf & Bear brought groove, The Fall of Troy brought chaos, and Dance Gavin Dance tied it all together with a set that felt huge from start to finish.
The Egyptian Room has hosted plenty of memorable nights over the years, but this one felt special. Loud, sweaty, emotional, technical, and completely alive. Exactly what a show like this should be.
